TearFree support has been available in the modesetting driver for a year with no issues reported. The code is mature and robust, with error handling that's been vetted across many hardware configurations. Notably, TearFree is also the only way to achieve a tear-free desktop with mismatched displays and transformed CRTCs. Enable TearFree by default for a smooth desktop experience out of the box. X Server
The X server accepts requests from client applications to create windows, which are (normally rectangular) "virtual screens" that the client program can draw into.
Windows are then composed on the actual screen by the X server (or by a separate composite manager) as directed by the window manager, which usually communicates with the user via graphical controls such as buttons and draggable titlebars and borders.
