DES isn't considered secure anymore for long time now, more and more platforms dropping DES from their RPC implementations, and even the one where it came from (Solaris) disabled it for a decade now. We have much better alternatives (eg. passing creds via Unix socket for local connections, ssh tunneling, MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1, ...), so it's unlikely anybody still really relying on it. X Server
The X server accepts requests from client applications to create windows, which are (normally rectangular) "virtual screens" that the client program can draw into.
Windows are then composed on the actual screen by the X server (or by a separate composite manager) as directed by the window manager, which usually communicates with the user via graphical controls such as buttons and draggable titlebars and borders.
